Today is World Mental Health Day. Sadly, one in f Today is World Mental Health Day. Sadly, one in four of us will experience a mental health problem throughout our lives, whether that be ourselves, or someone close to us, and unfortunately, most of us don’t get the help we need. Globally we are currently experiencing a decline in mental health of epidemic proportions. This absolutely has to change. Before the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2019, an estimated one in eight people globally were living with a mental disorder; that’s a staggering 12.5% of the global population. The majority of this being anxiety and depression. Not surprisingly, during the first year of the pandemic estimates showed a rise in anxiety of 26% and a rise in depressive disorders of 28%. According to the World Health Organization Depression is one of the leading causes of disability. Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death among 15-29-year-olds. People with severe mental health conditions die prematurely – as much as two decades early – due to preventable physical conditions. Despite progress in some countries, people with mental health conditions are still experiencing human rights violations, discrimination, and stigma. It is my belief that all change starts within us, within each individual. We can each do our small part to facilitate change. As the saying goes...you can’t pour from an empty cup: The empty cup being our depleted ability, or our capacity to give emotional care or support to others because we’ve burned ourselves out.
